Maribyrnong River Viaduct

Maribyrnong Viaduct Under Construction P

The Maribyrnong River Viaduct was built from 1927 to 1929 for a new railway line that would provide a link between the Bendigo line at Albion to the Sydney line at Broadmeadows. The new line would remove the requirement for the freight trains to climb the continuous rise from Essendon to Glenroy.

The bridge is almost 440 yards long (400 metres) thus it being known as the Quarter Mile Bridge. At the time of construction it was the largest trestle bridge in Australia, the highest bridge in Australia until the Sydney Habour Bridge opened and it is Victoria's second highest bridge, only behind the more recent built Westgate Bridge.
