After WW1, a number of returned servicemen from Sunshine decided to form a Sub-Branch of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (R.S.S.A.I.L.A.).

The League's club rooms were first in a building adjoining the municipal building in Hampshire Rd, Sunshine until 1951.

In 1952, the League then moved to Dickson St, Sunshine where Mr Cecil Newton McKay, the forth child of H.V. McKay donated 2 1/2 acres of land and the League purchased an additional 2 acres. Two army huts were purchased, renovated and joined together to accommodate the club's members.

Mr J. E. Simmie was the first president and Mr George Gray the foundation secretary. Both men served with the Australian Army during WW1.
