Headlie Shipard Taylor was born on the 7th July 1883 in Bungowanna, Nsw, Australia to Phillip Cullan Taylor & Mary Jane Taylor Nee Shipard.

Headlie was raised on his parent's wheat & sheep farm and this was where he developed an interest in improving the existing stripper harvesters. During the period of 1911 to 1914 he developed harvesters that could harvest stormed damaged crops.

Hugh Victor McKay saw Headlie's stripper harvester in action and successfully negotiation with him the patent & manufacturing rights to produce the harvester at his Sunshine Harvester Works factory.

Headlie began working at McKay's factory in 1916 and was living in Forrest St, Albion. He went back to New South Wales to married Ruby Maud Howard in Holbrook. Ruby was born on the 5th November 1890 in Goombargana, Nsw, Australia to Robert Taylor & Elizabeth Annie Adams.

Ruby moved to Sunshine and gave birth to her first child Bernice Ruby in 1919 at Sunshine. Further children followed including Headlie Howard (b14/8/1920), Geoffrey Alan (b30/10/1921), Gwenneth Shirley (b16/9/1923) & one other child.

Headlie & Ruby raised their family in a weather board house at 129 Durham Rd, Sunshine. This house was replaced with a substantial brick house in 1930.

 

Headlie died at Sunshine on the 22nd March 1957 and was cremated at the Fawkner Cemetery.

After the death of Headlie, his house at Durham Rd became the S. W. D. Hostel for young men. This house has now been replaced with single storey units.

 

His wife Ruby, died on the 27th December 1967 at East Malvern and her created remains are located beside Headlie's.
